Mac J.
O'Brien

“If I didn’t go into law, I would have gone into business. Being able to merge the two and feel like I’m helping somebody in the process—that was the moment that it clicked.”

Mac’s general corporate and transactional law practice includes an emphasis on regulatory law, primarily as it relates to insurance, health care, and financial institutions. “I’m very grateful to be practicing law here in Des Moines where the insurance industry is so prevalent,” Mac says. “It’s given me the opportunity to help clients navigate insurance regulation issues on nearly a daily basis.”

In addition to Mac’s regulatory law practice, he also routinely assists clients with their transactional matters, including secured transactions governed by UCC Article 9, employment agreements, independent contractor agreements, subcontractor agreements, nondisclosure agreements, and promissory notes. Mac also has experience forming business entities, including corporations and limited liability companies, and advising clients on corporate governance matters.

Among his strengths, Mac counts being detail-oriented and focused on the expectations of his clients. “I’m going to listen and take a comprehensive view of not only the legal issues presented, but how those legal issues impact the client’s long-term goals,” he says. “I want my clients to view me as a partner who is invested in their long-term success—not just another lawyer they call from time to time.”

He looks at resolving complex legal issues as a challenge to be savored. “I’m a lifelong learner, so I enjoy looking at new complex legal questions,” Mac says. “Being able to help clients in the process is what makes this job so great.”
