Q: What is your “elevator pitch” for the work that you do?

LE: I litigate cases so that my clients have the best possible options for resolution. Sometimes that means preparing a case for an appropriately-valued settlement. Other times, it might entail trying a case to a jury or appealing a wrongly-decided case.

Q: Why did you decide to practice law?

LE: My favorite activities are analyzing, reading, and writing. Practicing law was the perfect blend between these interests and my desire to help others.

Q: Why do clients come to you?

LE: I am honest and dedicated. I am not afraid to admit when I don’t have an immediate answer, but I will always put in the work to figure one out.

Q: What are three words your clients would use to describe you?

LE: Calm. Considerate. Comprehensive.

Q: Tell us one detail or story most people don’t know about you?

LE: I do quite a bit of creative, nonfiction writing in my free time. My focus is inspirational stories about lessons I’ve learned through everyday life.

Q: How does your experience as a creative writer affect your legal practice?

LE: Good writers connect with their audience and tell clear, compelling stories. Good lawyers do the same. Whether I’m drafting a brief for a judge or trying a case to a jury, my goal is to build a rapport with my audience and persuasively argue my client’s case.

Q: What do you do for fun?

LE: My Labrador, Old Sport, and I go on rides in my Jeep (preferably for ice cream).

Q: Where is your favorite vacation destination and why?

LE: Most years growing up, my parents took my four brothers and me to Higgins Lake, Michigan. It’s still my favorite vacation spot.

Q: What would you name your autobiography?

LE: Confessions of an Unabashed Introvert

Q: Tell us about something outside of work that brings you joy?

LE: I love all things green and growing. I spend a lot of time outdoors during the warm months, and my home and office are filled with plants to get me through the cold months.

Q: How do you unwind/relax?

LE: I read a good book—preferably in my hammock.

Q: What are some of the things you enjoy about being involved with in your community?

LE: One of my favorite aspects of living in Des Moines has been connecting with people who have had different life experiences than me. I love hearing other people’s stories. Being involved in my church has provided great opportunities to learn from people with different backgrounds.

Q: What issues are passions for you?

LE: I am passionate about learning, which is why I love this job. Practicing law requires me to constantly learn the ever-shifting legal landscape.

Q: What is one thing about Nyemaster that everyone should know?

LE: Nyemaster is known for great results, but its attorneys and staff are great people as well. I have loved getting to know the wonderful people I work with.
