Lisa
Wieland

“Productivity, creativity, and a collaborative approach lead to more solutions than problems.”

“When I was in the fifth grade, I had to do a biographical project,” Lisa Wieland says. “I chose Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female justice on the United States Supreme Court. Ever since, I’ve known that I wanted to be a lawyer.”

In her practice, Lisa efficiently handles all aspects of a commercial real estate transaction, from the initial draft of a purchase agreement to closing day, including financing components. She deals with due diligence, including reviewing inspections and survey work. Lisa reads abstracts and addresses title-related issues. She reviews all the final documents necessary for closing, such as lending documents, deeds, and easements.

With 10 years of experience as an attorney for the City of Des Moines, Lisa has exceptional insight into the requirements placed on real estate developers. “I have a great familiarity with the standards and requirements that a city will have for certain commercial developments,” she says. “I know the codes, board approvals, and practices needed.” Besides working with the City’s Engineering Department, Development Services Department, and Finance Department, Lisa also served as legal counsel for city boards and commissions, including the Urban Design Review Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustments, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Historic Preservation Commission.

Before she started in private practice, Lisa completed a judicial clerkship in the Fourth Judicial District of Iowa. “Hands down, it was the most interesting job I’ve ever had,” Lisa says. “I got to observe an abundance of great trial-level work—what people are doing that’s working well and what people are doing that’s not working at all.” It was also a revelation.

“The more I worked, the more I realized I prefer to be part of preventing the problem rather than responding to it,” Lisa says. “You have much more power in creating the solution when you’re in the drafting position.”

Organized, reliable, and efficient yet thorough, Lisa strives to advise her clients in the best ways possible. “I consider it a privilege to be in the position to offer this advice,” she says. “Gratitude for the opportunity to serve clients motivates me.”

Raised in Clive, Iowa, Lisa is proud of her local roots and has strong ties to her community. Now, she and her husband are raising their children in the Des Moines area.
