Kevin
Van Dyke

“With the experience I’ve gathered around health benefits law, I can assist clients with any questions they have.”

A good listener, deliberate, and caring, Kevin Van Dyke applies those characteristics to his law practice. “Being a good listener and paying attention to detail is critical,” he says. “You must fully appreciate the situation before you can analyze it.”

Using his more than 35 years with Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, most recently as deputy general counsel, Kevin offers clients extensive knowledge of federal and state health care benefits laws. “At both the federal and state level, the laws are constantly changing,” he says. “We have to learn new laws, how to implement those laws, and how to carry solutions forward for our clients.”

Kevin’s practice focuses on health benefits law, including insurers, plan sponsors, and third-party administrators. He advises on state and federal laws applicable to employee health benefits and plans sponsored by employers. He also handles guidance on COBRA and state law health benefits continuation and ERISA. “My experience is also in federal and state mental health parity, the Affordable Care Act, and the health benefits aspects of recent Consolidated Appropriations acts,” he says.

Kevin’s strengths are acting as a creator, connector, and teacher. Aligned with that, he sees building relationships and learning new aspects of the law as motivators. “The professional challenges appeal to me,” Kevin says. “I like dealing with health insurance and employee health benefits. I like helping people.”

That includes providing practical solutions for how an employer can implement revisions in federal or state law in a compliant way. “There’s a creative element in aligning with their current business operations,” he says. “In other words, to not have to blow up business operations. Rather, we can be creative in the way we implement to allow employers to continue their current operations.”

Finding those solutions means working with clients to understand their business. “It’s being innovative,” he says. “It’s taking a fresh look at a law, regulation, or some sort of business practice.”

Kevin’s focus always goes back to helping people and building relationships in all aspects of business and life. “I’m passionate about people, helping people, and teaching,” Kevin says. “That’s what I enjoy doing.”
