The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) is a global organization of approximately 12,000 individual members from 95 countries committed to advancing the science of food.  The IFT’s Food Law & Regulations Division focuses on food policy and regulations and the impact of each on industry, consumers and trade.

Since 1939, IFT has brought together the brightest minds in food science, technology and related professions from academia, government, and industry to solve the world's greatest food challenges. The organization works to provide its members with resources they need to learn, grow, and advance the science of food as the population and the world evolve. As a scientific community grounded in purpose, IFT feeds the minds that feed the world.

Van Thomme is an inventor himself.  He is also a registered patent attorney, and shareholder in Nyemaster Goode’s Des Moines office. His practice is diverse, but primarily focuses on partnering with both startups and larger clients to identify and collaborate on mechanical, chemical, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and food science-related intellectual property needs. He has been a member of IFT for over 14 years and has served in numerous practice leadership roles, including as past President of the Iowa Section of the IFT and Treasurer of the Great Lakes Section of IFT.
