Being a licensed pharmacist has been useful for Wendy Marsh in her more than 20 years of practicing intellectual property law. Because many of her clients’ inventions are related to pharmaceuticals or chemicals, that background knowledge gives her a head start. “I already have a good understanding of their technology and how their inventions work,” Wendy says. “I think the inventors appreciate the fact that I understand those aspects of their inventions.”

 

Focused primarily on IP matters, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights, Wendy appreciates the diversity of her practice. “You never really know what’s going to come in the door,” she says. “I might be working on a pharmaceutical patent application, but I also have a lot of trademark experience, so I can be working on a trademark case or prosecuting a trademark application.”

 

As part of that experience, Wendy frequently appears before the Patent Office Board of Appeals and Interferences. In appearances before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, she has argued numerous patent and trademark appeals. In addition to filing and prosecuting patent and trademark applications worldwide, Wendy counsels clients on issues relating to intellectual property acquisition, protection, enforcement, and management.

 

Before joining Nyemaster Goode, Wendy practiced for 15 years with McKee, Voorhees & Sease in Des Moines, where she supervised the firm’s international and trademark departments.

 

With her diverse background and work experiences, Wendy looks for the unique answer to each client’s individual situation. “Different perspectives from different experiences open up options,” she says. “The more things that I’m exposed to in my career and outside of the firm, the more options I can present to the client in trying to strategize the best solution to their problems.”

 

Throughout all of her strategies and casework, Wendy keeps her clients’ needs at the forefront. “When you’re writing briefs, you don’t always remember that you’re doing this for real people and that these things have a big impact on them,” she says. “What we’re doing is important to people and can really change their lives.”
